This wedding was so different from any that I have photographed...and I loved it!! Beth was one of my friends from high school and I was so excited to be able to photograph her big day. The whole thing was just like a big party with their closest friends and family and the bride and groom were so focused on everyone feeling like a part of the celebration. About 30 people attended and I loved how intimate the setting was. It was so fun walking around and trying to capture the whole setting. I almost felt like part of the family when I left! Everything turned out beautifully and I think everyone had a great time!

I am very blessed to work with such awesome couples! I know a lot of photographers say that...but really....it's true. These two were definitely awesome to work with! They were married the beginning of July and we were taking these at perhaps the hottest part of the day and there was no complaining from them! I mean, I was whining up a storm, I'm sure, but nothing from the groom in a tux and the bride with a zillion layers. I'm kind of a baby when it comes to any extreme weather...I should probably keep it to myself next time :)

ANYWAY...thank you Austin and Stephanie, and your families...you were all fantastic!!

This couple decided they wanted to take their bride and groom photos the day before the wedding and I feel like today went so much faster and less stressful for all since we had these done! AND you know this couple is AWESOME because they agreed to meet me at 7am so we could have the best lighting!! Yes, troopers.

I am so behind! These two got married over the summer and they were just the CUTEST couple! They had to know it too since I think I said it almost 100 times...it got kind of embarrassing after awhile, "You guys are so cute..." would just slip out! It happened again with their wedding! I just love capturing the interactions between a couple engaged to be married. Even those people who think they are bad in front of the camera seem to relax and look comfortable when they are with their sweethearts! These two were a joy to work with and we had a lot of fun!

Since it's been a month...

Wow...has it really been that long since I wrote that I was going to Utah?! Yikes...I need to get on it!

I am back, and have been back for awhile now! I have lots of new things to share and so I hope to do that soon!

For now I will just say this, my fall is almost booked...so if you would like to get a session in before the end of the year I would do it REALLY soon...because I think I only have room for maybe 2 more this year?

ALSO, my pricing has changed...I raised the basic session by $15, so it is now $100 for a session...the details can be viewed on the sidebar or you are welcome to e-mail me! Wedding pricing has been upped too...just so no one is caught off guard!

I hope you are all having a lovely September...starting school, waiting for fall...loving the cooler weather, oh wait...pretty sure it is still in the upper 90's here! I know we had a late summer so I should be grateful for that...and I am...but I love Fall...so I am REALLY ready!!

Anyway, it'll get here. I just need to be patient. That's something I definitely need to work on, patience. :)

I have been meaning to share this wedding for AWHILE now! It was awesome! I felt like a real pro :) Cruising in my fancy rental car and when people asked why I was in Portland saying, "I'm on business." Okay, I didn't really say that but it still felt pretty awesome being up there. Sad to be away from my kids and husband and all but really, I was gone a little over 24 hours...so it wasn't all that bad :)

This couple was pretty fantastic! I spent the whole day with them and the bride was pretty sure she was going to wear her wedding dress out whenever she wanted something for free. We got free parking downtown and the cashier girl at Noodles & Co. offered free lunch if she could take a picture of the bride and groom...not sure what she did with it, but whatever, we all got free lunch out of it, right?

All in all it was a really fun experience and I am so glad I got to capture this awesome duo! I wouldn't mind more of this traveling photographer stuff in the future! Very fun experience!

I went out to Vacaville earlier this month to take pictures of this handsome little guy! I was thinking it would be nice to take a few pictures outside because well, its June right? Well...it was raining. Pouring. Blah. I mean, the cool weather was nice while it lasted (and it actually is still lasting right now...) but I think it's time for the real June to start, don't you?

P.S. I went to scout out a location with a client today and a bird let loose on my head...pooped right on me! It was gross.

Wow! So Sorry! I go through spurts...usually I'm in the "I'm not good at blogging" spurt (which is now) and every once in awhile I get into the "I am good about blogging" spurt...which I hope to be in soon :)

We just moved a week or two ago...and are getting ready to move AGAIN. I love moving so much I just want to do it again. Don't you love moving too? Ok, NOT REALLY! I turn into the biggest grouch face when I'm moving...so hopefully by next month we will be settled somewhere for awhile! I will try and be better...I have a few fun things to share with anyone who might possible care...so I will get to it...soon :)

I read this quote the other day on the blog The Maternal Lens.The quote is by Ira Glass and I just love it...because I feel just like this! I have all these images and ideas in my head of what I want my artwork to look like and I so often feel like I can't emulate that in the outcome. This inspired me. Keep taking pictures. Keep trying.

"Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste.

But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this.

We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work.

Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I've ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You've just gotta fight your way through."

Wow. Just got back from photographing this couple in Portland...pretty much the cutest couple I've ever seen. Look at that darling dress...I had a blast with these two! Thank you, Thank you for letting me come and party!

Everything seemed to go their way that day. The rain that was supposed to come and we were planning for, didn't. About to pay for parking downtown, didn't. (Someone gave us their ticket because they had paid for a full day.) Ate at Noodles & Co. and the girl at the register said, "If I can take your picture I will buy your lunch." Free lunch. Awesome. Tried to sneak onto an old riverboat and when the tour guide came over, we thought we were being booted but he said, "Let me take you up to the captain's cabin..." Well, thank you!

So it was a great day and I can't wait to share the rest!

These lovely young women go to church with me! I have know many of them since they were just teensy little ones. it's weird that people I used to babysit are graduating, getting married, even having babies! I feel old. And I'm not really.....though my 3 year old son always tells me I am :) These girls are beautiful and I hope they always remember that.

So, it was supposed to rain this day...so said the weatherman...and let me tell you, IT DID. All day it had looked gloomy but no rain until I was leaving my house and it began to POUR. I had the wipers on full blast. But these two had driven up from Stockton and we were going to see what would come of our photos shoot. Amazingly enough, by the time we got to our destinatin the rain had stopped. And there was no rain the entire time!!

Wow. It was awesome...I mean the ground was definitely wet and these guys were troopers hiking up and down slippery rocks nearly falling to their deaths into the torrential waters of the American river...ok I am being dramatic...but they really were awesome and and I think we got some good stuff out of it. All our prayers for good weather were answered :)

Life is Busy

I've been busy...with just everything lately! I thought I would do better with blogging but yet again I am slacking! I keep thinking, "Oh, once I get past this one thing then I can relax..." Right. The saying, if it's not one thing, it's another...so true. Life doesn't ever seem to slow down. I often feel like John Mayer:

Stop this train
I want to get off and go home again
I can't take the speed it's moving in
I know I can't but honestly won't someone stop this train

I especially feel like that sometimes with my kids! Won't someone stop this growing up too fast thing? It is sad to see how fast it goes but exciting all at the same time! I guess we just need to live it up!

ANYWAY...here are a few things I have been working on...

I was able to take photos for my son's preschool...those kids are SO adorable! The only child who didn't cooperate was my son...imagine that.

Here is a recent picture which I just LOVE...I love the green grass poking up through the dead grass and the split-rail fence...and OF COURSE this darling little girl who just turned ONE! Even though the trees here have been blooming since February, it is finally starting to feel like SPRING! Though, here in Sacramento that feeling is often short lived, it is amazing while it lasts! I was meandering around my parents yard the other weekend while celebrating my brother's big 3-0 and took these...I bet my mom didn't think she had that many pretty flowers growing in her yard!

This was probably the fastest session I've ever done. Why? Well, this kids was just hammin' it up! If you look deep into his eyes you can see his daddy...I mean, literally. As I was editing I could see the reflection of his dad standing outside the sliding glass door braving the elements (it was a rainy, windy, freeeeeezing Saturday) to get this kid going. And seriously, it worked! THANK YOU!

We had a lot of fun on this shoot! This is my sister-in-law's sister...sounds distant...but I feel like we are immediate family. I remember when my brother got married this girl seemed just that...a little girl. And now look at her! Such a beautiful...grown up...girl! My sister-in-law was quite the trooper too, helping to hold the reflector...pretty much 9 months pregnant! She had the baby about a week later :) Thanks Jami and Cassidy for all the help and Kaytee...you are beautiful!

I am always looking for new places to shoot so I think I will share with others the places I am finding. We are constantly looking for a change of scenery, right? It can also give potential clients a look at the different places available to take pictures in the Sacramento area.

If you have any ideas you'd love to share, LET ME KNOW and I'd love to either feature it or let you guest post or something! That would be fun!

Today, I will do Negro Bar in Folsom, CA. I have a secret, or not so secret, love for Folsom. I always have...so, you will get several locations in Folsom in the future!

This place is right on the river with cliffs in the background, lots of trees, grasses, bushes, etc...there is also a dock too but they recently put some large posts in it that aren't super flattering but I am sure there is a way to get around it. Nature is everywhere, and depending on the season, you can get some great shots in the trees and shrubs in the surrounding areas too. But beware of the geese! They are fed often so they think everyone on the beach must be there to feed them!

We will now revisit some of the photos taken there in the past...just so you can get a look at what is in the area...though I should probably take pictures of the entire area too. Maybe for a future post.

And Maybe you'll be lucky enough to see this baby drive on out of the water...

"Back to the Future"

My husband showed me these pictures the other day. This photographer asked people to reenact a photo from their childhood or earlier in their life...and she did a pretty good job of recreating the pictures...like almost perfectly, really...the lighting, background, outfits, posing, etc. You should check it out.

WARNING: The girl with the accordion did not have a top on when she was little soooooooo...likewise, she is not wearing a top in the 2010 version either. Just FYI. She has a party top hat and bow tie if to give you heads up in case you feel like closing your eyes and scrolling :)

Nobody's Perfect

I need to be a better blogger. It's true. Would you come more if I blogged more? Probably, huh! What if it was just me rambling? Would you still come and visit? I hope so. Today, that is what you get. Sorry...but I figure maybe I should let you get to know me sometimes...and let you know that there are other photographers out there who may have the same doubts, problems, worries, etc. that you might have!

Often I look at other photographers blogs and dream of my pictures looking like that. Do you ever do that too? We need to stop...not stop looking for inspiration but stop comparing...I do anyway. That is one thing I want to do this year. Focus on being a better photographer, creating better images...but not comparing my work to others. I don't think any of us will ever stop learning...even the best of the best.

There.

It is written.

No more comparing myself.

I think it's ok to admit it.

Now let's admit a few more things while we're at it.

Not all our pictures come out of the camera lovely and perfect.

So...I will expose myself...or overexpose..ha....ha.......................ha

and show you some of my terrible photos.

NOT terrible subjects...let's get that straight (this couple was probably one of my all time favorite sessions!) Just my mistakes. Because when you see only the pictures that are posted on a photographers blog don't you feel that ALL their photos must be absolutely stunning out of the camera?

I know that doesn't logically make sense...but I subconsciously think that.

SO here is me showing you, I am not perfect. Because I know you really thought I was...uhhh...right. Ha. Ha.

You get some like this:

Underexposed and look at that white balance, BLAH...

A little overexposed, and again, white balance...

And then there are some that really are just lovely...

I feel like I have come a long way in my picture taking abilities over the past few years. Starting out I would have NEVER shown anyone my pictures in camera or unedited. I would look at them on the viewfinder and think of how I could fix whatever was going on later, in Photoshop.

Bad idea.

"I can fix later" means "I can (and usually will) spend a LOT of time in Photoshop fixing this."

It's okay if EVERY picture doesn't come out perfect. It really is.

P.S. I started shooting manually this past year and I think that has REEEEEEALLY helped with getting the correct exposure! Obviously, from the above photographs, not every click comes out but still. Change settings. Try again.

P.P.S. If any of my photo friends who are learning right along with me (or want to learn) want to go out and practice sometime LET"S DO IT!

I taught this girl in church when she was 16...and now she is off to college! Crazy how time flies. We went our for just a fun shoot and I brought along one of my photographer friends, Stephanie French. I was searching for proofing websites and I stumbled upon "Shoot Proof." I thought to myself, "A free proofing website that looks decent?" (Well, the basic package is free.) So I tried it out.

Then I received this in the mail:

A handwritten note!? What online company does that these days? I've yet to receive anything like this from a company where the only contact I have had with them is me uploading photos.

I'm sold.

I've only just started using them but so far, so good. And she even told me "cute name." Definitely sold :)

Two posts...in one day? This is so unlike me...well, wait...I guess it is 1:30 in the morning so it doesn't count as the same day BUT...my daughter is still up (sweet girl, SERIOUSLY...) so here I am and it still feels like Monday.

Here we have more family...my beautiful sister-in-law and her cute fam. We snagged the love seat from my mother-in-law's living room, threw it in the van, and asked the random neighbors if we could yet again use their cute pioneer cabin driveway. People are usually pretty nice, so I say, if you see someone's yard that you want to use...why not ask?

I was able to photograph another wedding last weekend! Very sweet couple. Here is one picture from their beautiful ceremony.

And as of today...I think (cross my fingers) that my computer dilemmas are over! Windows 7: installed. Photoshop: installed!!! So, I should be pumping out pictures like mad! I haven't really documented the computer annoyances here..but let's just say I was REALLY close to tossing my computer off the balcony :)

Forgive me once again for being a terrible blogger! I have excuses though...if that makes it any better? Probably not. I am working on several things at the moment though...so I thought I'd share a few photos so that the few people who check this thing might keep coming around :)

I got to take some photos for a girl who is entering beauty pageants. Apparently they need a head shot and a full body type shot...I think I still need some practice in the beauty pageant photos area, but perhaps this will be a start. My husband and i looked around online for examples of other pageant photos and most of them were INCREDIBLY photoshopped...is that even what they really look like? No, most likely. I mean I shaved off nothing on this girl and actually did very little to the photos and isn't she beautiful? AND she looks real.

I also shot my first wedding since the baby! It went really well! Awesome family and awesome couple.

Here is the lovely Hannah! I think this is the third time in the last few months that I have asked some random person if they wouldn't mind me taking a few photos in their yard! Part of this shoot was on this little tree-lined lane that led to a small pioneer cabin...so cute! AND so cute that I took my sister-in-law there and we asked yet again. So there will be more of the cute nephew later, but for now here is a beautiful senior!!

These two were just adorable...and the house we were at was adorable too! I thought i had stepped into a Martha Stewart magazine. We were in Woodland in the middle of a bunch of farms and this house was just amazing. Really, a dream. I wish I would have taken a few photos of the house and surrounding land...but that may be a little stalker-like...maybe not? Anyway, these girls are cute.

Here is a little one that I think could honestly be a baby model. I think we took photos for about 10 minutes tops...and I came out with TONS of cute ones. She was just hammin' it up there for the camera and she didn't even try to get off that chair (which I recently found for $2 at a garage sale...oh I love garage sales!)

Kate will be a year soon and I have watched her grow from here and here to these below. So fun to watch them grow up!!

The weather was overcast, which is nice because then I don't have to stress about lighting in the middle of the day...maybe someone who is really good doesn't stress about those things, but this girl (me...) does. I took photos of these two when they turned two...and now they are turning THREE! Oh the kiddos grow up too stinkin' fast!!

Little girls playing dress-up in the mirror seems to be a popular choice among moms these days...that is probably a sign that I need to prepare myself for this little girl growing inside me! I am so used to boys stuff...dinosaurs, cars, swords, wrestling, mud...real MANLY stuff, you know? Next thing I know it will be me taking pictures of my daughter doing her favorite thing...playing with frilly stuff and make-up! It'll be a change, but it'll be FUN!

And, by the way, I am due the first week of June, so I will be taking a break for most of May to finish up (and hopefully relax for a few minutes...) and also June...and I'm not sure about July yet. I'll figure that out and let you know!

So, I'm not actually even done editing this wedding...but I thought I'd post some photos anyway! If there are any more lovely ones (which is quite possible) I'll post them, but for now I am enjoying these!

My favorite parts of this shoot were the gorgeous lighting on the golf course...and the bride's mom knocking on the door of a huge mansion and asking if we could take pictures in their yard! Luckily the lady was super nice and we even were led through the house (which I think may have actually been a castle...seriously) into the backyard to take photos there too. Fun.

I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year's eve/day! I had a much needed break and now here we are again. Back to life. Here is a snippet of a couple that was AWESOME to work with. I hadn't actually met them until they walked out of the temple...and with that you never know who is going to walk out of there...bridezilla, sweetheart, could be anyone. Well, I was blessed that day. Not only did the weather in Oakland turn out lovely, but I got such a laid back and happy couple to work with. I'll take that any day!

I have been a terrible blogger. I will try and be better...I have quite a bit going on and I am trying to get everything done that I need to get done! Problem is...many of you may know by now, but I am expecting...and I have been sick, therefore have NOT wanted to even look at my computer or my camera...and also SO exhausted! When my kiddo goes down for a nap I know I need to get on here and edit but my bed is just calling me...so I usually listen...then when the kiddo goes to bed for the night, there is my bed again...and I usually listen again. Oh it has been so bad! So much to do. So much time to do it...but my body just wants to sleep during that time. Okay, enough rambling. here are some photos of one of my best friends cute little ones.

*And a side note, I usually give my clients at least one color and one black and white version of each photo they choose, BUT if you would rather have a sepia copy rather than black and white let me know! I am happy to do so.

I don't do a whole lot of "studio" work...one reason may be that I don't have a studio... just a few thumb tacks and a table cloth do just fine :) but sometimes I really think indoor can be cute! I had fun with this one. Why am I always so blessed to take photos of such good lookin' people? Well, obviously I am, because this little one is just that!

And one last one from this morning. This little one is now three months old! I took photos of her when she was just a few days old. I love watching kids grow. But not mine. I just want him to stay little. Always. Don't grow up Preston!

If you are pretty much only looking for a family picture for your Christmas card, I am offering Mini Snap Sessions every Saturday in October and November.

What you get:
About 30 minutes of picture taking at a location (focused on the family or children...or whatever you are wanting a picture of!) Then you receive 5 edited photos on a CD. Each Photo will be in color and black and white.

What you pay:
Each session is $65. Payment is due at the session.
